Algiers airport ranks among Africa's top 5 largest air hubs by passenger numbers
Algiers International Airport has ascended into the top 5 African air hubs for August 2026, based on programmed seat capacity. With 680,000 seats scheduled for the month, the airport shows a 7.2% year-on-year increase. This growth is largely attributed to the aggressive expansion strategy of national carrier Air Alg茅rie, which has programmed 825,900 seats and recorded the highest annual growth in the African top 10, a 16.8% increase or 119,000 additional seats compared to August 2025. This positions Algiers as a strategic hub connecting Africa to international destinations. According to the Official Airline Guide OAG report for August 2026, Algiers airport captures over half of the 1.2 million seats programmed across Algeria. While Cairo 1.85 million seats, Addis Ababa 1.25 million seats, and Johannesburg 1.15 million seats lead the continental rankings, followed by Casablanca 800,000 seats, Algiers surpasses other major African hubs such as Nairobi 570,000 seats, Cape Town 560,000 seats, and Tunis 530,000 seats in both volume and growth dynamics.
