Archbishop Duncan-Williams raises concerns over Ghana's illegal gold trade

During a Sunday service, he recounted a visit to a Middle Eastern country where officials informed him that they had received significant amounts of gold from Ghana through illicit channels. The figures shared indicated that the volume of illegal gold was approximately three times higher than what Ghana officially recorded as sold to that country, which deeply disturbed him. Duncan-Williams stated that powerful individuals with substantial financial resources are behind this illegal trade.

He noted that the establishment of the Ghana Gold Board GoldBod under the new administration, aimed at regulating the gold trade, appears to have impacted the black market supply. He later received calls from individuals, including some from the Middle Eastern country he visited, complaining that they could no longer acquire gold from Ghana through the black market as they had previously. These callers reportedly sought access to high-level Ghanaian officials to discuss gold purchases, involving substantial sums of money.

Duncan-Williams urged Ghanaians to pray for the nation as efforts continue to regulate the gold sector and combat illegal mining and trading.
