Five dead, 10 rescued in Kano building collapses
Five individuals have died and 10 others were rescued following two separate building collapses in Kano State, Nigeria. The incidents occurred on Saturday in the Kumbotso and Fagge Local Government Areas. The Kano State Fire Service responded to distress calls, with the first collapse happening at Gaida, where a building under construction collapsed on six workers. Two workers, 17-year-old Muhammad Hassan and 19-year-old Khalid Abubakar, were rescued alive. Four other workers, identified as Sunusi Surajo 18, Bashir Ibrahim 20, Ibrahim Ibrahim 25, and Abubakar 30, were rescued unconscious and later confirmed dead. All six victims were taken to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital. The second incident involved the collapse of an Islamiyya school building in Kurna, Fagge, affecting nine students aged between 12 and 15. Eight students were rescued, while 14-year-old Khadija Muhammad was rescued unconscious and later confirmed dead. The victims from the school collapse were handed over to the headmaster, Muhammad Gambo Usman. The causes of both collapses are under investigation. The Fire Service has urged building owners, contractors, and construction workers to adhere to safety precautions and approved building standards, especially during the rainy season, and advised the public to report emergencies promptly.
