Gauteng Premier Lesufi acknowledges government's failure in managing immigration and demand
Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi admitted that the provincial government has not adequately addressed foreign immigration and demand, despite progress in other areas. Speaking at the ANC鈥檚 election manifesto launch, Lesufi stated that authorities underestimated the scale of demand. He highlighted that while infrastructure like roads, schools, clinics, hospitals, and police stations have been built, the planning and budgeting did not match the population growth driven by both inter-provincial migration to Gauteng and the influx of people from other African countries. Lesufi noted that Gauteng, as South Africa's wealthiest province and a major economic hub, attracts many seeking opportunities. A 2025 StatsSA report projected approximately 1.42 million migrants to Gauteng between 2021 and 2026, primarily from Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal, and Mpumalanga, with over a quarter of all South Africans residing in the province by 2025. Furthermore, Stats SA's 2022 census indicated over 2.3 million foreign nationals live in South Africa, mostly in Gauteng, while an International Organisation for Migration report estimated this figure at around 4.2 million. Most immigrants originate from the Southern African Development Community region.
