Anambra launches probe into illegal mining activities causing environmental degradation in Onitsha

These activities have led to significant environmental concerns, including land degradation, erosion threats, and potential violations of environmental regulations in residential and river layout zones. Dr. Clem Aguiyi, the Commissioner for Environment, expressed alarm at the level of degradation during an inspection, describing it as disturbing and unacceptable. The probe aims to determine if the mining operations were officially approved and if operators complied with environmental laws and land reclamation requirements.

Preliminary findings suggest excavation on private land under individual supervision, which is now under investigation. Concerns also include a structure built within a natural water channel, potentially worsening flooding and erosion, and the instability of large land portions due to extensive excavation. Residents of Trans Nkisi have complained that the continuous excavation makes the area vulnerable to gully erosion.
