
Gabon pledges support for Juliana Lumumba's OIF Secretary-General bid
Gabonese President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema has assured Congolese President F茅lix Tshisekedi of Gabon's full support for Juliana Amato Lumumba's candidacy for Secretary-General of the International Organization of La Francophonie OIF. This pledge, made on August 15 in Libreville during Tshisekedi's working visit, strengthens Lumumba's diplomatic campaign ahead of the election on November 16, 2026, in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Juliana Amato Lumumba, 70, daughter of Patrice-脡mery Lumumba, is a political science graduate with over three decades of experience in media, culture, public governance, diplomacy, and economic cooperation. She served as Vice-Minister and then Minister of Culture of the DRC from 1997 to 2001 and led the African Union of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Agriculture, and Professions from 2007 to 2015. Her international experience and multilingualism French, Arabic, English, Lingala, and Swahili are highlighted as assets. Lumumba's platform, "Nine New Projects for a New Francophonie," advocates for a "Francophonie of the people, by the people, and for the people." Her vision aims to strengthen intercultural exchanges, economic integration, linguistic diversity, and climate cooperation. She proposes a Francophone visa for talent mobility, a Francophone peace academy, and inclusive digital transition. She also seeks to position the OIF as a key player in education, innovation, and the economy, focusing on cultural and creative industries, SMEs, and diasporas.
