African languages and sovereignty: lessons from Nkrumah, Sékou Touré, and Sankara

While all three leaders championed African dignity and fought colonial dominance, their approaches to language policy varied significantly, demonstrating that political will alone does not guarantee lasting transformation in education, administration, and access to knowledge. Nkrumah, Ghana's first President, focused on cultural representation and Pan-Africanism, making Accra a hub for African ideas. However, English remained the primary language of instruction in Ghanaian schools from 1957 to 1966, despite the presence of Ghanaian languages in culture and media.

This revealed a tension between Africanizing discourse and retaining colonial languages in education. Sékou Touré's Guinea pursued a more radical linguistic reform in the mid-1960s, introducing eight national languages, including Soso, Maninka, and Pular, as languages of instruction. This ambitious policy required significant state investment in orthographies, terminologies, textbooks, and teacher training.

However, the reform was heavily tied to the state-party and Touré himself, and after his death in 1984, French was quickly reinstated as the exclusive medium of formal education, demonstrating the fragility of reforms without broad societal support.
