Nigeria Football Federation addresses referee's death during fitness test, denies negligence
The Nigeria Football Federation Development Committee, through its Chairman Faith Irabor, has addressed the recent death of a referee during a fitness test in Abuja, describing it as an unfortunate incident. Irabor stated that there was no negligence in the medical process, as the official underwent all required medical examinations, including an electrocardiogram, and was certified fit by doctors before participating. She explained that referees are required to undergo medical checks in their states and are further cross-checked by a medical team upon arrival. The deceased referee had presented a medical report certifying his fitness. Irabor also dismissed claims that the ambulance at the venue was non-functional, confirming it was used to transport the referee to the hospital. She noted that officials were closely monitoring participants and responded immediately when the referee showed signs of distress. While insisting all precautions were taken, the committee is considering strengthening the medical screening process, possibly by requiring examinations at the National Hospital. Premier League referee Ayuba Peter and Oyo State referee Akinwale echoed Irabor's sentiments, calling the incident unfortunate and not attributable to negligence, highlighting the medical procedures in place for participants.
