Professor Jason Arday, Cambridge's youngest Black professor, dies at 41
Professor Jason Arday, a British-born Ghanaian academic who became the University of Cambridge’s youngest Black professor, has died at the age of 41. Arday was appointed to Cambridge’s Faculty of Education in March 2023 at 37. His career spanned from a challenging childhood in south London to British academia, where he focused on race, education, inequality, and social justice. Born to Ghanaian parents, Arday grew up in Clapham, south London. He was diagnosed with autism and global developmental delay at age three, not speaking until 11 or reading/writing until 18. Despite early bleak expectations, he pursued higher education and advocated for inclusion. Before becoming a professor, Arday worked as a cleaner and a trading assistant at Sainsbury’s. A sports lecturer, Sandro Sandri, played a crucial role in his educational journey, helping him with literacy and encouraging his potential. Arday held professorships at the University of Glasgow and Durham University before Cambridge, authoring three academic books. At Cambridge, he was Professor of the Sociology of Education, focusing on social justice and intersectional inequalities. He was passionate about widening access to education, aiming to democratize higher education and encourage young people from marginalized backgrounds. Beyond academia, Arday raised over £5 million through charity work, including running 30 marathons in 35 days in 2010.
