Nigerian medical and dental academics give federal government three weeks to meet demands or face strike
The Nigerian Association of Medical and Dental Academics NAMDA has given the Federal Government a three-week extension, until August 31, 2026, to finalize negotiations regarding its outstanding demands. This decision was made during the association's Emergency National Executive Council E-NEC meeting, as stated in a communiqu茅 issued to newsmen in Uyo. NAMDA warned that if a meaningful resolution is not achieved by the deadline, it would declare a three-day warning strike. The association has instructed all its branches nationwide to engage members through congresses and sensitization programs to prepare for potential strike action, with reports on mobilization activities to be submitted to the NEC. NAMDA expressed concern over the government's perceived reluctance to conclude negotiations and the non-prioritization of medical education and training, especially given the shortage of medical and dental doctors and the "Japa syndrome" in Nigeria. The association also acknowledged the interventions of the Directorate of State Services DSS and other allies in the ongoing negotiations. It reaffirmed its commitment to the full implementation of approved benefits for medical and dental lecturers and urged members to comply with all directives from the meeting.
