Algeria's natural gas production reaches three-year high in first half of 2026
Algeria's natural gas production increased by 4.2% in the first half of 2026, reaching 54.01 billion cubic meters. This marks the highest level of production for the country in three years, up from 51.81 billion cubic meters in the same period of 2025. This performance continues an upward trend observed since 2022, when production was 49.23 billion cubic meters, indicating a progressive increase in extraction capabilities. Domestic gas consumption also rose by 6.3% to 28.49 billion cubic meters during the first six months of 2026, primarily driven by the electricity generation sector. To maintain its export volumes, Algeria is accelerating its energy transition by integrating more solar energy into its national electricity mix. This strategy aims to reduce internal reliance on gas and maximize export capacity to the European market. Algerian gas exports, including pipeline gas and liquefied natural gas, increased by 2.4% to 23.97 billion cubic meters in the first half of 2026, compared to 23.40 billion cubic meters in the previous year. Pipeline exports alone reached 3.06 billion cubic meters in June, up from 2.95 billion cubic meters in June 2025. Algeria, under President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, aims to double its natural gas exports to 100 billion cubic meters, reinforcing its position as a reliable energy partner amid geopolitical tensions and strong European demand.
