Opposition parties support motion to remove National Assembly speaker Kuugongelwa-Amadhila
Opposition parties, including the Independent Patriots for Change IPC, are backing a motion by IPC lawmaker Imms Nashinge to remove National Assembly speaker Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila. They allege she rules parliament with an "iron fist" and bias, and has exercised powers belonging to parliament itself, failing to follow proper procedures. Nashinge states the motion was prompted by concerns over the speaker's application of parliamentary standing rules, including the removal of members and handling of complaints. The IPC cites standing rule 1111 regarding contempt complaints and rule 1041 concerning member removal, alleging these rules have not been followed. The party also questions the handling of parliamentary questions, noting that out of approximately 550 questions tabled, only 166 have been disposed of. Parliamentarian Job Amupanda claims Kuugongelwa-Amadhila is refusing to receive the motion of no confidence, causing a parliamentary standstill. Landless People's Movement spokesperson Lifalaza Simataa views the motion as an opportunity to scrutinize the speaker's ability to facilitate debate and accommodate diverse views, especially as parliament evolves with more robust opposition voices. Kuugongelwa-Amadhila has rejected the motion, stating Nashinge cannot appeal to remove the same person she is appealing to, and has deferred a ruling on its tabling.
