EU supports Morocco's autonomy plan for the Sahara

During her working visit to Morocco, Ms. Kallas reiterated the European Union's position, urging all parties to engage in discussions without preconditions, based on Morocco's proposed autonomy plan to achieve a definitive political solution. This stance, endorsed by all 27 EU member states, was documented in a joint communiqué issued after her meeting with Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Residing Abroad. The EU welcomed Morocco's willingness to clarify how autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty would be implemented. Furthermore, the EU commended the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 2025, which fully supports the efforts of the Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy in facilitating negotiations, building on Morocco's autonomy plan. This EU position is particularly significant, serving as a strong signal ahead of an upcoming UN Security Council meeting. Beyond the EU as a bloc, several European countries have individually expressed strong support for Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara and its proposed autonomy plan. This international momentum, initiated by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, reflects a consensus among the 27 EU member states for a final resolution of this regional dispute, based on autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty.
